Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered if you’ve been here before?
I’ve always kept an open mind when it comes to things we can’t explain—especially the idea of past lives. Without proof, it remains a mystery. But that hasn’t stopped me from exploring it.
A while ago, I took part in a past life regression session with Sally, founder of The Therapist in My Bag. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I left with vivid impressions that stayed with me far longer than I anticipated.
One image, in particular, stayed lodged in my mind: a vintage typewriter and a solitary woman—elegant, distant, and deeply familiar. I didn’t know who she was, but she felt like someone I had once been… or needed to become.
At the time, I hadn’t begun writing. But months later, when I started work on my trilogy, that vision resurfaced—and subtly shaped what would become The Foundations of Love.
Was she a figment of imagination? A whisper from a former life? Whatever she was, she helped bring my story to life.
✨ Here is an excerpt from The Foundations of Love, a scene inspired by that powerful and mysterious regression experience.
I invite you to read it with an open heart—and maybe even ask yourself: have I been here before?
A horse-drawn carriage stopped in the middle of a busy square. Horses, black as midnight, moved backwards and forwards as flies attacked them from all angles. The dusty cobbled ground, scorched by the midday sun, filled with crowds of people who waited in anticipation.
The door to the carriage opened, and a lady wearing a deep purple jacket and long silky skirt stepped out. The feathers in her hair matched the ones fixed to the headdresses of the horses. Her auburn hair glinted in the sunshine. She glanced across at the crowds and waved, the smile not quite reaching the corner of her eyes.
The square faded, and the woman sat at a bar, nursing a glass filled with deep red liquid. Music and laughter filled the packed bar as people engaged in deep conversations. A teardrop fell silently into her glass as a sense of loneliness overwhelmed her. She smiled politely as people approached her for an autograph and scribbled her name on napkins or pieces of scrap paper. Although she was visible to the outside world, she felt invisible.
Over two decades ago, she’d left the love of her life to pursue a career in acting, follow her dreams, and live the life she desired. However, this had a price – no ability to commit to a relationship. Her life was full of brief encounters who she met whilst she travelled the world. She embraced her destiny, acknowledging her decisions, yet struggled to escape the abyss of solitude. It felt like a part of her was missing, and she envied couples who embraced each other in public, as they danced together, their bodies moulded as one. She tried to envision a future, stood next to her true love, but could only see darkness…
Until next time,
Love,
